Meet Lisa

Trekking coach

Lisa is a world-class trekking coach, adventure consultant and outdoor enthusiast. She attributes her deep respect and admiration for nature to her parents and childhood in South Africa. Lisa is an advocate for consciously making time to be in nature, to connect with it, and to enjoy it with loved ones.

In 2016, after an 11-year stint in Sydney, Lisa, her husband and their two children moved to Noosa in search of fresh air, beaches and an outdoor lifestyle. We caught up with Lisa for a bush walk at Mt. Timberwah and were lucky enough to catch an epic sunset over the hinterlands.

What about Noosa feels like home?

The ocean, the walking trails, easy access to the beach for an early morning walk or swim, the relaxed riverside setting for family picnics and special celebrations with friends, and, of course, good coffee.

What does community feel like to you?

A feeling of being embraced and knowing there’s someone there to call upon in hard times. A sense of calm and contentment, a shared set of values, and no judgement. Connecting people and their expertise for collaboration.

How did your interest in trekking begin?

Growing up in Africa, I hiked in the Drakensberg mountains with my family as a child. I have always loved walking and the connection to nature, so hiking with friends and family became my passion. In 2006, I met a like-minded trekker and we established a successful business in Sydney training women to get for trekking adventures all over the world.

Is there a specific expedition that has most impacted you as a person?

Yes, I invited my mum and my sister to climb Mt Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, with me for my Mum’s 70th birthday celebration! The family thought I was mad, but the experience of taking on this challenge together as a family, surrounded by a wonderful team of women from all over the world, is something I will never forget. My mum had never slept in a tent, nor climbed a big mountain at altitude before. It just shows with the right preparation, the right attitude and a great team, anything is possible.

What inspired you to become a coach?

I love seeing the change in people when they take on a big goal and experience the joy and energy of getting fit in nature. The elation and confidence they feel, seems to trickle into all aspects of their life and their being. There’s something magical about mountains and the lessons they teach us. I want to share this magic with as many people as possible, especially at a time when many people’s lifestyles are keeping them from being active outdoors. I truly believe that if we and our children aren’t connected to nature, we won’t consciously protect it and appreciate it.

What's been the most important lesson for you as a coach?

To be a great listener. To always be a step ahead foreseeing risks and challenges in the outdoors, and finding ways to help my clients prepare for these. To know when it is time to encourage or push someone to go that bit further, or when it is time to step back and breathe.

How do you find peace in your day to day life?

I find walking, trail running and ocean swimming, give me the opportunity to be “in the moment”. They connect me with nature and I feel grounded for the day ahead. If something is worrying me, I always feel better able to deal with the concern once I have had some time out in the outdoors.

How do you celebrate milestones?

Always with friends and family! We love informal gatherings with our friends, and will often have “pot luck” parties at our home where each family brings a dish and there’s a whole selection of yummy, homemade goodies to feast on.

Soy cap.

Any words of wisdom you live by?

Whenever I feel overwhelmed or challenged or upset by something or someone, I come back to Don Miguel Ruiz’s four agreements - be impeccable with your word; don’t take anything personally; don’t make assumptions; always do your best.

What's next on the agenda for you?

I have been invited to join an all-female team to take on the XPD Adventure Race in July 2021. It is a multi-day trekking, mountain biking and kayaking event to be held in Cairns. Seeing as I only really have experience in trekking, I have a whole lot of preparation and training to do to get ready for this expedition!
